Many Gulberwick children, parents and local residents enjoyed a pleasant, sociable and friendly afternoon at the Gulberwick Picnic on the afternoon of Sunday 22nd August.

The tide was out and Gulberwick beach was covered with more beautiful clean sand than has been the case for some years and this gave great opportunities for the sports and games. This was in stark contrast to the previous year when the sand from the beach had formed an offshore island and there was scarcely enough sand to meet the demand for sandcastle building.

Great imagination was applied to the design of the castles/constructions encouraged by the various category of prize. As well as the impressive castles and fortresses, the sand constructions included oasis, turtles, mermaids, brochs and included a wide selection of natural materials from around the beach to enhance the result.

The popular treasure quiz and hunt expanded the search territory to find a range of materials and items. The teams achieved remarkable times in finding the materials and after the tattie and spoon races and tug o' war, etc everyone was in need of sustenance and appetites were more than satisfied with a 'pot luck' feast of food with soft drinks and teas served in the hall.

The fifth Gulberwick Picnic was declared another great success and is likely to be a regular feature in the Gulberwick calendar of events. The brig across the burn at the beach and the gates and stile has been completed and now provides easy access to the beach, particularly for the smaller and younger members of the community.

Gulberwick Together are grateful to everyone who helped to arrange the activities and events, prepare and serve food and participate in another successful community event.
